Izzy started working with dogs at the SPCA in Singapore as a Shelter/Quarantine Staff and Adoption Counselor in 2008, in large part with Singapore Specials and rescues which formed a lasting love and affection for mixed breed dogs. Over time, focusing on sorely needed socialization and rehabilitation of animals in shelter environments long-term sparked a keen interest in behaviour and how to work with fearful and under-socialized dogs.
In addition to shelter work Izzy has a background as a Veterinary Assistant, fosterer, and neo-natal caregiver; she has hand-reared eleven puppies from birth to adoption, which gave her the chance to socialize and train these puppies from the beginning using positive reinforcement.
Izzys career change to dog training stemmed from wanting to help her own fearful and hand-shy Singapore Special Jonah. After seeing how Jonahs confidence and quality of life improved using slow desensitization and patience she has applied herself to training using positive reinforcement and force free methods. At the moment she does not have any dogs of her own, but would love to adopt again some day.
Stepping into the world of canine behaviour professionally, Izzy joined the Puppy Colours daycare in early 2017 and was the Senior Teacher and Manager at the Newton Campus until mid-2024. This was a wonderful opportunity to learn how to create healthy structure and routines, engaging training sessions, and safe interactions.
In 2021 Izzy started teaching private classes for puppies, teens, and behavioural cases - drawing on experience as well as evidence-based research. These classes involve both theory and practical lessons and teach parents to make good choices to help their dogs make good choices.
Izzy particularly enjoys building confidence and socializing in classes as this is a key part of a puppy’s growth and development, but should be done at a puppy’s own pace. She finds helping dogs grow through their puppy and teen stages into confident and well-behaved adults through patient encouragement and consistent learning extremely rewarding and educational.
